AI-based surgical robot assists in removing kidney stones

A research team in Japan ran a clinical trial on an AI-sponsored surgical robot to test its assistance capabilities while performing percutaneous nephrolithotomy, a minimally invasive procedure to remove kidney stones. The robot has been developed by NDR Medical Technology, a Singapore-based medical startup, and is named Automated Needle Targeting with X-ray (ANT-X). The robot assisted with the placement of the needle and, by employing one X-ray image, it is capable of calculating needle targeting within seconds, the company reports. Since the robot simplifies the procedure for surgeons, it will lessen workforce burnout and allow young surgeons to perform the procedure more safely.
