Group of collaborators to launch food as medicine initiative

A new drive is introduced with the help of a $6.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. The goal of the initiative is to enhance the process of producing and using vegetables and fruits grown in the Mississippi Delta. Other participants in the initiative include the Reuben V. Anderson Institute for Social Justice at Tougaloo College, the Delta Health Center, and the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). This initiative will encompass the food desert counties of Bolivar, Washington, and Sunflower, where obesity is too high and diabetes is 200 % higher than national level. In the case of success in producing healthier foods, these two issues are believed to be resolved.
