Researchers turn white blood cells into microrobots for targeted drug delivery

A team of researchers from China have reported that white blood cells can potentially be turned into microrobots with the help of lasers. For precise medical treatments, laser manipulation can pave the way for efficient targeted drug delivery. The experiment has been carried out on zebrafish. Though targeted drug delivery is an area of great interest in healthcare, it poses certain challenges. One of the things that was noted in this experiment is that the immune system has the potential to trigger and eradicate any outside invader. Therefore, before the microrobots can deliver drugs, they are attacked by the immune system. To counter this issue, scientists are using other techniques as well, such as employing neutrophils to deliver drugs to a specific area.
