Researchers unlock new method for exploring brain disorders related to age

Researchers at Lund University were able to discover a new method to study brain disorders, the cause of which stems from ageing. Focusing on Huntington’s disease, a neurodegenerative condition, the scholars have been able to publish findings in the journal Brain. The major hindrance to producing effective treatments is creating disease models because it is difficult to recreate animal or cellular models. Johan Jakobsson, the leader of this research group, reprogrammed skin cells into neurons, devising an innovative way that will be applicable in studying other age-related disorders as well. The team found interesting results that were able to show the differences between the neuron mechanisms of a healthy and affected brain, thereby explicating the underlying cause. The team is hopeful that this study will lead to better results for other diseases as well.
